My Superpower: Self Learning Skills

Updated: Dec 30, 2024

One thing that has always been with me is my ability to be a self-learner.

When I was a kid, I used to solve math problems on my own. During my engineering years, I graduated without any backlogs, completing my degree in the first attempt entirely through self-study. In PGDM, MA Psychology, BEd, Post Graduate diploma in Guidance & Counseling, I was consistently relied on self-learning, even I am going through a Career & amazingly well in teaching Psychology (which I learnt self). Over the years, I’ve taught myself various skills like Photoshop, Premiere Pro, photography, videography, editing, designing, and web designing, public speaking or even driving, it was all self learnt.

This journey taught me something profound: if I truly want to learn something and push myself toward it, I can get a solid grasp on the subject. This skill of Self learning is my Superpower.

However, there is also a downside. My brain often resists learning from others. This trait has sometimes kept me from gaining valuable insights from people who wanted to teach me. For instance, I remember one of my boss once said, "We can create skill in someone, but not will." Because I have always relied on self-learning, I struggled to fully benefit from good teachers and mentors.

Leveraging My Superpower - Self Learning Skills

Recognizing both the strengths and weaknesses of being a self-learner has been enlightening. The key is to find a balance:

  1. Learn independently: I need to continue pushing myself to explore and learn on my own.

  2. Learn from experts: I should also make a conscious effort to learn from people who are experts in their fields. For example, I started doing this with Mr. Nitin Shrivastava (my mentor), and it has helped me immensely.

Action Plan for Growth

From now on, I need to:

  • Be actively involved:

I should listen intently and absorb as much information as possible.

  • Feed my brain with data: The more information I consciously expose myself to, the more sense it will start to make over time. As Einstein said, “A child never craves for food he has never tasted.” Similarly, the more I expose myself to new knowledge and ideas, the better my understanding will become.

Final Reflection

My self-learning ability is a gift, but to maximize its potential, I must balance it with openness to learning from others. This way, I can combine my intrinsic drive with the wisdom and expertise of those around me, ensuring continuous growth and improvement.
